Senior Database Engineer (MariaDB / High-Load / Real-Time Systems)

Firebird is an international online travel company that organizes trips to Europe for customers worldwide. The role is based in a fully remote, full‑time capacity and focuses on the company’s high‑load train scheduling system. The system processes large volumes of real‑time railway route data and is built on MariaDB, featuring complex caching logic, task queue processing, and query optimization. The engineer will work on commercial projects such as rail ticket booking (https://rail.ninja), online trip builder (https://triptile.com), and hotel booking (https://hotel.ninja). Responsibilities include designing and maintaining database architecture, optimizing queries and schemas, developing stored procedures, managing migrations with Flyway, monitoring performance with Percona Toolkit, and collaborating with cross‑functional teams. The role requires deep expertise in MariaDB/MySQL, SQL, indexing, and performance tuning, as well as experience with high‑load systems, Linux, bash scripting, and version control. Additional value is added by knowledge of Docker, CI/CD pipelines, AI agents for SQL, NoSQL caching solutions, and cloud database services such as AWS RDS and Google Cloud SQL.

- 5+ years of experience with MariaDB/MySQL and a deep understanding of database architecture and optimization
- Expert‑level SQL knowledge (complex queries, window functions, CTEs, subqueries)
- Experience developing stored procedures and functions in MySQL/MariaDB
- Proficiency in performance optimization of queries and database schemas
- Strong understanding of indexing and optimization strategies for large datasets
- Experience with Flyway or similar database migration tools
- Knowledge of Linux/Unix and bash scripting for automation
- 5+ years of commercial SQL development
- Experience with high‑load systems (processing millions of records)
- Knowledge of database design principles and normalization
- Experience working in a team using version control systems (Git)
